Detroit — Voters in Metro Detroit and Michigan communities are heading to the polls to choose mayors, city council members, and key measures in Tuesday's general election.

The polls close at 8 p.m.

In Michigan's largest city, Detroit, voters decide whether Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield or the Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr. succeeds Mayor Mike Duggan. If Sheffield wins, she would be the city's first female mayor .

Detroiter Gloria Hannon, 62, said she votes in every election after casting her ballot at St. Paul Baptist Church. The site houses voting precincts 79 and 81 and is located on Gratiot Avenue south of Eight Mile Road on the city's northeast side.

She said the city's mayoral race is especially important to her this election, and she hopes Sheffield wins.
