A Japanese restaurant in Brookline, known for its extensive menu of sushi and shoji decor, is closing after 27 years in business.

FuGaKyu broke the news on Facebook on Oct. 31.

“We regret to announce that our owner decided to cease operations due to his personal reasons — effective Nov. 5, 2025,” the Facebook post read . “With deepest gratitude, we thank every patron who has graced our tables and shared countless memories with us over the years.”

According to the restaurant’s website, FuGaKyu opened in 1998 in Coolidge Corner. MassLive reported that the restaurant once had other locations in Lynnfield and Sudbury, but both have since shuttered.

An outpouring of memories and best wishes were posted on social media from former diners in response to the closure news.
