New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed new legislation that requires affidavit ballots to be counted if a voter appears at the wrong polling place, as long as they are voting in the correct county of assembly district.

It’s Election Day across the Capital Region, and voters from Albany to Saratoga Springs are heading to the polls to decide pivotal local races that will shape leadership, budgets, and community priorities for the next four years.

Albany County

Albany Mayor

One of the region’s most closely watched races is for Mayor of Albany, where Democrat Dorcey Applyrs faces Republican Rocco Pezzulo.

Applyrs, who won a decisive Democratic primary in June, has campaigned on investing in “forgotten neighborhoods,” improving quality of life, and collaborating with residents on key issues like public safety and the city’s next police chief. She’s earned endorsements from state leaders including Attorney General Letitia James and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie.

Her opponent, Pezzulo, a lifelong Albanian and mental health consultant, is running to become the city’s first Republican mayor in a century. He’s calling for expanded police resources, the removal of speed cameras outside school zones, and stronger incentives for small business growth.
