GRAND BEND – A longtime goal for Grand Bend legion vice-president and membership chair Brenda Couckuyt has come to fruition with the unveiling of three poppy blankets at the legion.
The blankets, consisting of thousands of crocheted poppies attached to netting, were put on display at the legion on Monday, Nov. 3, six months after the project started. One blanket, consisting of 1,111 poppies, adorns the cenotaph, while two other blankets hang on railings outside the legion entrance.

Couckuyt said to those who gathered for the unveiling that she had a poppy crocheting idea on her to-do list “for some time,” and earlier this year, met a woman who was crocheting poppies for blankets for the Bayfield and Clinton cenotaphs. Inspired, Couckuyt decided to launch the Grand Ben
