MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - A candle left burning while no one was home in a Williamson Street apartment caused a fire, the Madison Fire Department said Tuesday.
The call came in around 3:45 p.m. Monday from the 800 block of Williamson Street.
MFD said people inside the building heard smoke alarms and saw a fire on a table inside a neighbor’s unit.
The neighbors were able to get inside the apartment and use multiple fire extinguishers before MFD arrived.
Once firefighters got to the building, they removed the table and cleared the smoke from the apartment.
The resident of the apartment was not home when the fire started, but returned home while firefighters were responding. The person confirmed a candle was burning while no one was home, MFD said.
The apartment suffered heavy smoke damage
