New York City has recorded a historic turnout in its mayoral election, with over 1.5 million people casting their votes so far in the contest between Zohran Mamdani, Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa. Officials said around 256,000 voters turned out during late afternoon as polling sites saw a late surge.
As of 3 p.m. ET, nearly 1.5 million people had voted in New York City’s mayoral election, according to the city’s Board of Elections. With six hours still to go until the polls close, the turnout had already surpassed the total votes cast in any city mayoral election in the past 20 years.
According to The New York Post, early results will start coming in shortly after polls close, but major US networks are unlikely to call the race before 10 p.m. (local time).
