The recent discussions between the U.S. and Argentina on beef trade policies and prices have raised concerns for cattle producers on both sides of the Canadian/U.S. border.
Executive Administrator for the Manitoba Livestock Marketing Association, Rick Wright, says the U.S./Argentina situation is only a part of a much bigger and complex situation with the cattle markets, resulting in a dip Canadian producers have seen over the past two weeks.
"It moved the futures on the butcher cattle down lower, and that had a negative effect on the feeder cattle market," says Wright. "You know, in Canada here, we saw some classes of cattle that were over 600 pounds drop anywhere from $0.50 to $0.60 to $0.70 per pound compared to what we saw at the highs."
