LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The Las Vegas City Council passed a new ordinance Wednesday that would ban Las Vegas pet shops from selling several different kinds of animals, including dogs and cats.

The council passed the ordinance in a 5-2 vote, setting new standards and updating pet shop regulations to ensure the health and welfare of animals and to reduce the risks associated with large-scale breeding operations, the city said.

Starting Wednesday, new pet shops in Las Vegas cannot sell dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, or potbellied pigs. The shops can instead partner with local rescues and shelters to help pets get adopted.
