A Newark police captain has been suspended without pay after being charged with drunken driving early Sunday in Hunterdon County, authorities said.

Elvis Perez was pulled over on the southbound side of Route 202 in Readington at 12:13 a.m. Sunday, according to municipal court records.

Perez is charged with operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs, careless driving likely to endanger person or property, and failing to drive in a single lane, according to those online records.

He is due in court at 10 a.m. on Dec. 11, according to court records.

Newark police confirmed the man charged in Readington is a captain employed by the department.
