Would-be burglars in a Chicago suburb lured a family from their home by shouting "fire" before attempting to break inside, police said.
Park Ridge police reported that just before midnight Tuesday, homeowners in the 1300 block of Brophy Avenue heard someone shouting about a fire from outside their home.
The people shouting said the homeowners needed to exit the home.
As they exited, they saw two men dressed in dark clothing standing near the back door of the home. One of the men threw an object through the rear glass door, police said, and tried to enter the home before they were confronted by one of the victims.
Both men fled the area and were last seen running northbound, sparking a heavy police search that included Park Ridge officers and the Niles Police K9 unit.
