A new commissioner of the Arkansas Insurance Department was sworn in Wednesday, state officials said.

The Arkansas Department of Commerce announced in a news release that Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders appointed Jimmy Harris to fill the role.

The Arkansas Insurance Department's primary mission is to protect consumers and ensure the financial stability of insurers, according to the release. Additionally, the department licenses and regulates insurance companies operating in Arkansas, administers the state government's workers' compensation program, provides Medicare counseling to senior citizens, and investigates consumer complaints and insurance fraud.
