WALHALLA, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office said an investigation into a Sweepstakes Scam led to the recovery of approximately $20,000 for the victim.
Officials said a deputy took a report from a victim back in September stating she received a call from Publisher’s Clearing House. The caller stated that the victim had won $250,000 and a Mercedes-Benz vehicle. However, the victim would need to pay approximately $20,000 to help cover any fees before she could receive her prize.
According to the sheriff’s office, the victim withdrew the money in a Cashier’s Check and sent it to the company. After the check was cleared, the victim realized it was a scam. The scammers attempted to contact the victim after the check was cleared, stating that more money needed to be paid
