Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she won’t seek reelection.

The announcement Thursday by the California Democrat brings to a close a storied career that saw her become the first woman to hold that job and arguably the most powerful woman in American politics.

On Capitol Hill on Thursday, several senators commented on the former speaker’s storied career.

Sen. Tim Kaine, (D) Virginia, says she will be missed by the congressional body.

“I mean, truly a history-making speaker, but also a very, very effective one at a challenging time, and the body will miss her,” Kaine said.

Her decision comes as a seasoned generation of political leaders is stepping aside.

Pelosi was an architect of the Affordable Care Act and other landmark policies.

The 85-year-old congresswoman relinquished her leadership position three years ago.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, (D) Connecticut, said age should be measured by energy and ideas.

“Age should be measured by ideas and energy. Nancy Pelosi has both. She's chosen to retire. Nobody's compelled her to do it. She's contributed enormously to America. And I think she'll continue to contribute in whatever new roles she has,” Blumenthal said.
