A federal judge said Thursday she will order federal agents in Chicago to limit the use of force against peaceful protesters and journalists, ruling that current practices violate constitutional rights. U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis issued a preliminary injunction in response to a lawsuit alleging agents used excessive force during an immigration crackdown in the Chicago area.

The order, expected to be appealed by President Donald Trump’s administration, expands an earlier directive requiring agents to wear badges and bans the use of tear gas and other riot-control tactics on peaceful demonstrators. Ellis also ordered agents to wear body cameras after criticizing officials for failing to comply with previous court orders.
