With government employees and those who receive SNAP benefits beginning to feel the effects of the government shutdown, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey organized a food distribution site today in northern New Jersey.
"Yeah, we're definitely not political and we don't believe this should be a political issue. That children are hungry, we should feed them no matter which party you're in," Elizabeth McCarthy with Community FoodBank of New Jersey said.
The CFBNJ organized 4,000 emergency boxes – 2,000 boxes with shelf-stable food and 2,000 boxes with fresh produce to be given out at the relief site.
Some federal workers started missing full paychecks last week and SNAP recipients are expecting to receive only half of their benefits at a delayed, undetermined date because of the shutdown.
