WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT IT?

Sitting in a pool bar in Kuta, Bali, there’s very little question about which beer to review this week.

Sure, I could grab a Singaraja, an Indonesian pilsner popular with locals and tourists, or maybe share a tower of Prost, an Indonesian premium lager, or even explore the burgeoning craft beer scene that includes exciting new brands such as Kura Kura.

But most of the time, I’m reaching for a Bintang Pilsner, whether that beer is a “small” 330ml, a “big” 620ml, or even the tinnie version.

It tastes good because the weather is hot and sticky, the beer is ice cold, and the price ($5) is right.
