SALEM, Ore. - Governor Tina Kotek (D-Ore.) has directed the Oregon Department of Human Services to allocate $1 million in emergency assistance to Oregon's nine federally recognized tribes. This move aims to tackle the food security emergency resulting from the ongoing federal government shutdown.
The funds will be distributed to help address food security needs within tribal communities. This initiative is part of a broader effort, including $5 million already directed to the Oregon Food Bank network to support food access statewide.
“The refusal of the Trump Administration to maintain SNAP benefits during the federal shutdown is creating instability for families and communities that rely on this critical help to buy food,” Gov. Kotek said.
