ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Matrix Midwest/AP) - St. Louis Blues goalie Jordan Binnington said he had the full intention to return Alex Ovechkin’s 900th goal puck after he put it in his pants.
Ovechkin’s 900th goal came 2:39 into the second period , when he caught Jakob Chychrun’s rebound off the boards and backhanded it past Jordan Binnington.
The 40-year-old is the only player in NHL history to reach that milestone, and the bench cleared to commemorate his achievement as Binnington tried to hide the milestone puck by tucking it away in his pants. Linesperson Michel Cormier recovered the puck.
After the game, Binnington said, “Yeah, I figured I basically had an assist on the goal there, turning it over, so didn’t think he’d mind sharing it, but I had full intention of giving it back to him.”
