A man has died after a workplace incident in the New South Wales Hunter region overnight.

At about 11.50pm yesterday, emergency services were called to a construction site on the New England Highway at Tarro, near Newcastle.

Police were told a worker was standing behind a parked truck when he was hit by a material transfer vehicle that was travelling toward the truck.

The 45-year-old man died at the scene.

He is yet to be formally identified.

The male driver was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

Police are investigating and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
