Sarnia is in the middle of an $8-million, multi-year plan to upgrade its biosolids processing facility, which broke down late last year.

Both centrifuges at the excrement-processing sludge facility failed, meaning Sarnia had to contract a “dewatering” service for about two months to keep the process going, to create farm field fertilizer, said city engineering and operations general manager David Jackson.

The overall hit is about $1.5 million – $700,000 in 2024 , and about $800,000 in 2025, city budget documents show.

The rare double-centrifuge failure also added about $230,000 in sludge screening and overtime costs, according to the latest .

One or the other “past-end-of-life” centrifuges had broken down before, but never both at once or for so long, Jackson said
