A nonprofit in North Texas is stepping up to meet growing needs as federal SNAP benefits remain delayed during the ongoing government shutdown.
Bonton Farms, based in South Dallas, has long focused on equity by helping its neighbors access healthy food, medical care and overall wellness. That mission continues as families face increased hardship.
“There’s already a need when you live and work in a food desert,” said Mark Jones, president and CEO of Bonton Farms. “I think that the biggest challenge for us in watching is that the need is expanding.”
With SNAP benefits frozen and delayed, the nonprofit is offering steep discounts through its Double Up Food Bucks program, which helps customers stretch their food assistance dollars further at local farmers markets.
