CLEVELAND, Ohio — Mayor Justin Bibb on Thursday announced a 30-day moratorium on utility disconnections for nonpayment as the federal government shutdown stretches into its 37th day, leaving families without paychecks and food assistance.
Starting Friday, customers of Cleveland Water and Cleveland Public Power will not face service interruptions due to unpaid bills, the city announced in a news release.
Account balances will continue to accrue, but Bibb said the move is intended to keep residents connected to essential services during a period of financial strain.
“Our city understands what Cleveland families are going through right now,” Bibb said in a statement. “No one should have to choose between keeping the lights on and putting food on the table.”
