PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – The Federal Aviation Administration and U.S. Department of Transportation are set to reduce air traffic by 10% at 40 of the country's busiest airports, including Portland International Airport, in the wake of the ongoing government shutdown.
As of Thursday, air traffic controllers are working without pay, and as a result, the FAA and USDOT are moving to reduce capacity.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said this move is data based, after the FAA spent the week looking at the numbers. He said pressure is building in the system.
“I anticipate there will be additional disruptions,” Duffy said. “There'll be frustration. We are working with the airlines. They're going to work with passengers. But in the end, our sole role is to make sure that we keep this airspace
