RICHMOND, Va. — In 1989, Virginia voters elected longtime state lawmaker Doug Wilder as governor, marking a significant national milestone that led him to be the first elected Black Governor of a state in the entire country.

It would be at least another decade before another Black governor was elected into office.

In an extended sit-down with 13News Now, Wilder talked about another historic victory, this time the election of Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger, who became the first woman elected to the position in Virginia history.
