HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - Through the years, the game of football has changed.

Some teams are adding another line of defense: soft shell helmet covers.

The soft-shell helmet covers are made by a number of manufacturers and have several brands.

One of the most well-known brands is Guardian Caps.

The Georgia-based company’s protective helmets are worn on the outside of football helmets to help reduce the impact of daily hits.

In August 2024, 13-year-old Cohen Craddock passed away after dying following an injury at practice, according to first responders.

After Craddock’s death, West Virginia lawmakers attempted to pass a bill requiring all student athletes in school-organized football practice to wear the soft-shell helmet covers, but it did not pass.
