Detectives have released new images of two men they believe are linked to the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old man in Melbourne.

Athan Boursinos, the son of a retired Victorian Police sergeant, was shot several times in a laneway behind a home on Champions Pde, Wollert shortly before 9am on July 31, police said.

Efforts to revive Mr Boursinos were unsuccessful and he died at the scene. The attacker fled the scene in a vehicle.

New information suggests the murder was sanctioned by a NSW-based organised crime syndicate, with the suspects travelling to Melbourne from NSW in the days prior, police say.s

Newly released CCTV footage shows two men and a white Volkswagen SUV they believe are linked to the murder.

It is believed the incident was targeted, police said, but they are still working
