WEST VILLAGE, Manhattan (PIX11) -- A 27-year-old woman has died after police say she was hit by a van going the wrong way down a street in the West Village.

People who live near Morton Street say drivers are frequently making the illegal turn.

The victim was in the crosswalk when police say a van came out of the garage and made an illegal left-hand turn.

Several bouquets are now placed on the corner of Morton Street and 7th Avenue, where the woman was struck and killed around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Morton Street is one way, so the driver of the van should have only made a right turn, but Philip Mortillaro, who works nearby, says cars frequently make a left for a quick exit to 7th Avenue south.
