The US Supreme Court on Thursday allowed President Donald Trump’s administration to enforce a policy restricting passport gender markers to only “male” or “female,” reversing lower-court orders and igniting sharp debate over transgender rights and safety.
The ruling permits the administration to proceed with the policy while a lawsuit challenging it continues. It halts a lower-court order that had required the State Department to let applicants choose “M,” “F,” or “X” on passports to align with their gender identity. The court’s three liberal justices dissented, according to The Associated Press.
