Louisiana grocery chain Rouses Markets announced plans Thursday to institute a cash change rounding policy as the federal government phases out production of the penny.
Rouses said in press release that its roughly 7,000 employees have been trained to round up to the nearest nickel when providing customers with cash change that would normally require the use of a 1 cent piece. If a customer is owed 91 cents, for example, Rouses would return 95 cents.
Credit, debit, EBT and mobile payments will not be affected.
While Rouses stores will continue to accept pennies as payment, the chain expects its supply to become significantly depleted as the coin becomes defunct.
