CHICAGO (WLS) -- Ruben Torres Maldonado spoke exclusively with ABC7 Chicago on Thursday with gratitude and emotion as he says he endured "inhumane conditions" at the ICE facility in Broadview.

The father of a teen girl battling cancer says it was really a feeling of helplessness with his view of the American dream suddenly vanishing while he was in DHS custody.

Torres is grateful to be home. He returned to the Northwest Side of Chicago just one week ago after being released from DHS custody.

Thursday night, Torres spoke to ABC7 with a sense of relief and appreciation for the opportunity he still has in this country.

"I'm so happy... thanks to the people who support my family in this situation," Torres said.
