GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Gainesville city commissioners are moving forward with a $100,000 contribution to Bread of the Mighty Food Bank.
Alachua County commissioners are setting aside $200,000.
City leaders approved spending the money on Thursday in response to the federal government shutdown, which has disrupted food stamp benefits.
“And that creates a tremendous crisis nationally, but that crisis visits itself locally. And we know that we have about 12,000 residents of the city of Gainesville, inside the city limits, who depend on that and who cannot depend on that right now,” said Gainesville Mayor Harvey Ward.
