Sophia Simon’s job on penalty corners may seem simple, but it is integral to Verona’s success.
“Usually I hang around the post to try and get those post balls,” Simon said. “My job is to just tip it in or be there in case anything goes awry.”
In the second quarter, Simon inserted the ball to Taylor McClain to begin the action on a penalty corner.
McLain faked right, dribbled left and found herself with an opportunity to fire a shot on goal. Instead, she passed the ball back to Simon - who by design found open space next to the net. Simon took a shot from point blank range that just went by the outstretched arms of the diving goalie and into the back of the cage - giving Verona a two-goal lead.
