New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday directed all states and Union territories (UTs) to remove stray dogs from sensitive public spaces, including educational institutions, hospitals, sports complexes, bus depots and railway stations. The top court further ruled that these animals, once sterilised, cannot be released back into the same locations.

A bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria, which is monitoring stray dog-bite incidents through a suo motu case, said that allowing their return would “frustrate the very purpose” of securing these areas and ensuring public safety. The detailed order will be issued soon.
