OREGON - Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley have introduced new legislation aimed at supporting SNAP recipients during government shutdowns.
The proposed bill, known as the Emergency Relief for Hungry Families Act, would allow grocery stores nationwide to voluntarily offer discounts to SNAP recipients if a government shutdown prevents them from receiving full benefits.
The introduction of this legislation comes after reports earlier this week that the USDA is attempting to block grocery stores from providing discounted prices to SNAP recipients. This includes a situation in Roseburg, Oregon, where Grocery Outlet was instructed by the department to halt such discounts.
