Storied Australia captain Mark Taylor has urged Sam Konstas to ditch the bold shots and go back to basics to force his way back into the Test team.

Taylor has backed Jake Weatherald to debut for Australia when the Ashes get underway in Perth on November 21.

If Weatherald is selected and becomes Australia's 472nd Test cricketer, he will replace fallen whiz-kid Konstas.

The 20-year-old was left out for Australia's two-match series in Sri Lanka at the start of this year — mainly due to selectors preferring Travis Head to open the batting in Asia — and the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
