NEW SHOREHAM – Rodman’s Hollow , a deep, natural ravine that sweeps down to the sea on Block Island, is one of the most stunning spots that I’ve ever hiked.

Footpaths cross the hollow through waves of meadows covered with goldenrod, northern bayberry and red, shining sumac. The trails run up and down rolling hills before reaching the rim above the ocean and 150-foot bluffs of tan-colored sand. Far below, waves crash on an isolated beach and over black rocks just offshore. The sea, tinted deep blue and light green in places, rises and falls with white-capped swells and stretches as far as the eye can see.
