Bighorn ewes always look a little startled.

They might be grazing along and notice you, look up to give you a glance and when they do, you kinda wonder if they’re about to bolt. Same sort of thing when they’re looking straight at you. Their eyes seem to bulge a bit, their eyelids widen out and they look like you just hollered “BOO” at them.

It’s a look I got a lot this week out at Sheep River Provincial Park.

The day was bright and sunny, the shadow edges so sharp you could cut yourself on them, and the air was perfectly clear. From a ridge above the Anchor D ranch I could see the road leading into the Sheep River valley and the mountains beyond so clearly it felt like I could reach out and touch them.
