A woman who falsely claimed to be Madeleine McCann has been found guilty of harassing the missing girl's parents, but cleared of stalking them. Julia Wandelt, 24, from Lubin in south-west Poland, insisted "I do believe I'm her" during her trial at Leicester Crown Court.
The court heard how Wandelt had persistently harassed Kate and Gerry McCann by sending emails, leaving voicemails, and even turning up at their home. She also sent "disturbing messages" to the couple's friends, pleading with them to put her in touch with the McCanns.
However, the jury unanimously decided that Wandelt was not guilty of stalking, but guilty of harassment. Her co-defendant, Karen Spragg, was acquitted of both charges.
