Although it was never Will Tracy's intention of writing something that felt as relevant and timely as it ended up being, Bugoniais just that: a topical and satirical film from director Yorgos Lanthimos that feels especially critical of today's current political climate. A remake of a 2003 South Korean film, the story follows a conspiracy theorist (Jesse Plemons) kidnapping a famous CEO of a pharmaceutical company (Emma Stone) due to his belief that she is an alien sent to Earth to destroy the planet. Filled with parallels to real world paranoia narratives, misinformation, and the reminder that humans are destroying their planet just fine by themselves, it's not hard to see why Bugonia has been found to be culturally relevant.
