A wanted gangster was killed in a shootout in Azamgarh’s Raunapar early Friday morning by the Uttar Pradesh Police’s Special Task Force (STF), in a coordinated operation with the Azamgarh district police.

Police said the accused, Waqif (38), had a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for his arrest. Police said four of Waqif’s associates, however, managed to flee the scene and efforts are underway to track them down.

Hailing from Azamgarh, police claimed, Waqif had a long criminal history with as many as 49 cases registered against him over the past decade. The charges included cattle theft, cattle smuggling, cow slaughter, and attempt to murder, among other serious offences.
