Iowa —

The United States Marine Corps is celebrating its 250th anniversary on Monday, Nov. 10.

There are special cake-cutting events across the country that day, organized by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. MCHF is a nonprofit organization that supports the historical programs of the Marine Corps in ways not possible through government funds.

The public is welcome to attend a cake-cutting at the Iowa Statehouse at 11 a.m. on Monday.

One of the most notable Marine veterans from Iowa is Cpl. Harold "Pie" Keller. The Brooklyn native was famously pictured in the iconic flag-raising photo during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. For 74 years, he was misidentified as another Marine. The Marines issued a correction in 2019, two years after his death.
