Frustrated by unpaid dues, Qatari giant Al-Thani Group has expressed its intention to withdraw from Karachi's Port Qasim Power Project, which is part of Beijing's China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) , reported Karachi-based financial daily, Business Recorder. The Al-Thani Group is linked to Doha's influential ruling family.
The Al-Thani Group's intention to divest from the Port Qasim plant fits into a broader trend of foreign investors growing wary of Pakistan's payment practices, financial reliability and poor fiscal discipline. Over the last few years, multiple multinational companies have quit Pakistan.
The Al-Thani family had earlier approached Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif seeking repayment of hundreds of millions of dollars owed to the plant's developers.
