A civilian staff member at an upstate New York prison fatally shot themselves in a prison administrative building on Friday morning, Nov. 7, state correction officials said.

The incident happened at the Marcy Correctional Facility in Oneida County, where the staff member entered the administration building and took his own life with a firearm, the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said in a statement on Friday morning.

Staff members immediately began lifesaving measures, and EMTs and law enforcement were called to the scene. However, the staff member could not be saved, officials said.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased, the staff at Marcy who witnessed this horrific action, and those who knew and worked with this person,” the agency said.

DOCCS Commissioner Martuscello and the Office of Special Investigations responded to the scene. The department’s Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) team has also been deployed to support Marcy’s staff in the aftermath.

Officials emphasized that there is no risk to staff or the incarcerated population at this time. The investigation remains ongoing.
