The old Pic-a-Book store that was located years ago in the 500 block of State Street used to set up a window display to express the owners' disgust with book bans, which have been around, I suppose, since books were written.
Libraries, book stores, authors and publishers came together in 1982 to organize a week dedicated to pushing back at the practice of banning books, a mainstay of the culture wars that ebb and flow in America, particularly in public schools.
And right now that ebb and flow has become a flood.
Banned Books Week this year was observed Oct. 5-11 and included many events in Madison and Dane County public libraries to call attention to the censorship that suppresses free expression, ideas and creativity.
