After more than four decades, remains found on a beach in southern California have been identified as a 33-year-old newlywed, who died in a boating accident in 1978.

The yearslong investigation began when skeletal remains, specifically a human jawbone with teeth, were found on Silver Strand Beach in Oxnard in May 1984, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said in a recent news release . After the discovery was reported to authorities, the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the bone belonged to a man, aged 19 to 99.
