Gary O'Neil has emerged as a candidate for the Southampton job after turning down a return to Wolves, talkSPORT understands.
The Englishman is a contender to replace Will Still in a move that would likely go down poorly with Portsmouth fans.
The former midfielder played 192 times for Pompey over several seasons with the south coast club.
O'Neil had looked to be set for a shock return to Wolves after the club sacked Vitor Pereira .
Pereira replaced the 42-year-old at Molineux and the Wolves hierarchy had wanted to bring him in again.
