OMAHA, Neb. —

Omaha Mayor John Ewing, Jr. gave an update on the city-wide food drive .

People donated non-perishable food items over the span of a week to to be given to the Food Bank for the Heartland.

It was a partnership between the city, Douglas County, Goodwill, Omaha Community Foundation, United Way of the Midlands and others.

In total, the city netted a total of $600,000 for local pantries and the Food Bank, as well as donated about 41,000 pounds of food. The mayor said that total will rise.

Ewing said the city will continue to help serve the need as the government shutdown goes on and SNAP benefits remain impact.

He said the Shine the Light on Hunger campaign will kick off November 18th, but you can donate early. You can donate now at the Holiday Lights Festival website .
