Hawaiian officials closed an iconic surf spot to swimming after a man was attacked by a tiger shark.
Ocean Safety Bureau officials closed Hanalei Bay on the north shore of Kauaʻi at 3:10 p.m. on Wednesday after a resident was bitten surfing near the Pine Trees surf break.
Hanalei Bay is considered one of the best surfing spots in the Hawaiian Islands, especially during the winter months.
The man, identified in a GoFundMe as Chance Swanson, suffered injuries to his legs. He was transferred to Wilcox Medical Center and eventually Queens Medical Center on Oahu.
“Chance is a well-respected lifeguard and surfer, and one of the humblest people you will ever meet. He embodies the true spirit of Aloha, and is a shining star, always happy and smiling,” Swanson’s mom, Rose, wrote in the GoFund
