ROCKFORD, Ill. — On Saturday, November 8th, the Alpine Kiwanis Aktion Club in Rockford will hold a major fundraiser aimed at empowering adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The group helps members gain leadership skills, build confidence, and take part in meaningful community service throughout the year.
Valerie Johnson, who has served as an advisor with the Aktion Club for roughly two decades, says the organization gives visibility and dignity to a group often overlooked.
“I think, having worked with adults with disabilities for a number of years, I find that a lot of times, people just don't see adults with disabilities,” she said.
She added that the club provides a rare opportunity “for them to be seen and to show that they can be a productive and caring citizen.”
