MARCY, New York (WWNY) - A civilian worker at Marcy Correctional Facility near Utica died after shooting himself inside the prison’s administration building on Friday morning.

The state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision made the announcement in a Facebook post .

It said the staff member shot himself with a firearm he brought to the facility.

According to DOCCS, staff immediately began lifesaving measures, and both EMTs and law enforcement officers responded to the scene.

“Despite their efforts, the individual could not be saved,” the statement said. “Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased, the staff at Marcy who witnessed this horrific action, and those who knew and worked with this person.”
